Farm to Foodie

One of our family traditions is to go apple picking every year. For years, Matt and I would go on a weekend in the fall and load up on apples. We’ve continued that tradition with Eliana.

Here are photos from her inaugural trip to the farm last year.
Don't worry, we didn't let her drive.

This year she was able to be a lot more involved in the picking!

Another family tradition: A photo of Eliana "driving."
Taking a snack break.
Family Fun!

Coming home with a bushel-full of apples inspired me to make a big batch of spicy applesauce to add to Eliana’s morning oatmeal. Here’s the original recipe I posted months ago and below is the “bulk” recipe. I put most of the applesauce into a container in the refrigerator to use over the next four days. I also filled three 2-ounce containers and put them in the freezer to use over the next three months.

Spicy Applesauce
·     6 apples, peeled and chopped (I used a mixture of Gala, McIntosh and Baldwin apples)
·     ¼ cup of water
·     Cinnamon and chili powder to taste
Put the chopped apples in saucepan large enough that they fit in an even layer. Add about half the water. Stir, cover the pan and heat the apples and water on medium-low heat. Let the apples simmer for around 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and smush easily with the back of a spoon. Add the cinnamon and chili powder and stir. Lower the heat, cover and let simmer another 5-10 minutes until the apples break down even more.

Foodie Fun

Typically during a meal, Eliana and I sit at the table and she feeds herself off her tray. We “talk” about what we are eating, what’s been happening that day or upcoming events. But, sometimes we get a little goofy and silly. At times, I even let her play around a little bit while she eats. I will let the pictures below tell most of this story.

Lately, she has been really excited about her new high chair and likes to explore it, even when she isn't eating. Sometimes these explorations continue into mealtime. Thankfully, the baked chicken she was eating in this series of photos (recipe below) wasn’t going to leave any stains anywhere. Come on, you think I’d let her roam around while eating something like blackberries or salsa?
Puh-lease!

Here I come!
Bite break!
I know, Mommy. I need to make sure I swallow so I don't choke. Sheesh!
Is she looking?
Peekaboo!!!!!
Hmm, let me try something here.
Maybe a little redecorating.
Oh yeah, later Mommy!

One thing we love about the new high chair is that Eliana is now at the perfect height to be able to sit at the table with us and she doesn’t need to use the tray. This will be perfect when she gets a little older and eats off a plate. For now though, it isn’t realistic. I don’t like the idea of putting most of her food directly onto our fake-wood table. And using those plastic table covers we use at restaurants is really wasteful four times a day. But, sometimes, depending on what she is eating, I forego the tray altogether or pull her up to the table. And that means Eliana gets to lounge a bit as she eats. Take a look at my classy little girl.

What? Can't a gal relax and enjoy her snack?
Hee hee! I LOVE putting my feet up on the table.
I know, I know. Don't get used to it.
Maybe if I stop looking at her she will let me snack in peace.

How can I raise a teeny tiny foodie if we don’t have fun with our food, right?

Baked Chicken Breasts
·     4 chicken breasts, rinsed and patted dry (I like Murray's brand)
·     Juice of one lime
·     Olive oil to taste
·     Salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili powder to taste all mixed into a small dish
Heat the oven to 365°. Pour a little bit of olive oil into a baking dish and put the chicken in, one breast at a time, and rub it around in the olive oil. (I use a fork to do this so I don’t have to touch anything.) Do this on both sides. Squeeze the lime juice onto both sides of the chicken breasts, too. Finish each side with the spice mixture. Bake for around 30-35 minutes. Turn the broiler on low-heat and cook for 3-5 minutes more so the top is golden.

Happy Cooking!

Who needs a teething toy?

Who needs a traditional teething toy when a piece of rosemary works just fine? Eliana and I harvested a bit of rosemary today for a bean salad I made for her dinner. (Recipe coming soon.) As I was cutting some sprigs, Eliana grabbed a leaf and stuck it in her mouth. And then proceeded to roam around chewing on it until she spit it out to eat lunch.

Crazy Little Lady!

Rosemary rocks!
Haha! I have some and YOU don't!
What do you mean I'm supposed to chomp on a pacifier instead. Puh-leeze, Woman! You don't call me teeny tiny foodie for nothin'!

How will our garden grow?

To me, part of making Eliana a teeny tiny foodie is teaching her not just to like a variety of tastes and textures but to have an interest in where her food comes from. On Mondays, we take our weekly trip to the grocery store and as we gather our goods I talk to her about all the foods we see and buy. We stop to touch, smell and, in her case, taste the green beans- see photo below. Or, whatever it is that we are looking at.

A view from above. She's in the carrier as we do our shopping. New meaning to eating on the go.

I’ve been thinking a lot more about how far our food travels as well. What is the cost to our health, and to the health of the planet, if our organic strawberries travel here from the other side of the country? There has been a constant debate going on in my head: local vs. organic? And then there is the seasonal factor as well. Obviously, produce that is in season is tastiest, healthiest and cheapest so we’d be silly not to buy it. We are lucky in that there are a few farmers markets each week that we can shop from, too. The farmers markets are also a place where I can get seasonal, local produce that might not be organic, but is very low in pesticides. So, we’ve been frequenting them more and more.

But, still, I want Eliana to have an even deeper connection to the process of getting our food. So what did I do? I recruited my mom and Suzanne, “Susu” to Eliana, to help me plant a garden! Before I go into that story, you need a little backstory first.  Suzanne is my father-in-law Steve’s girlfriend and one of my favorite people. Suzanne keeps a garden at home so I knew she’d be a great choice to help me out. And then my mom, is obviously my mom so she is a top choice to help me with many projects, too. She has always been the resident horticulturalist who has cared for our houseplants and even coached me a few years ago, via Skype, to move one of our plants into a newer, bigger home. Every time she comes into town, she is tasked with caring for one plant or another that needs a little TLC. Mom and I have always talked about how “one day she would help me plant a garden.” But, last year when Matt and I moved to an apartment with an amazing outdoor space, and my mom and I could finally start a garden, I was very pregnant and stuck on bed rest. And then two weeks later, I was in charge of a newborn. Not optimal conditions for getting my green thumb on. Sigh, my garden would have to wait.

When the warm weather arrived this spring, I started getting really, really impatient about my lack of a garden. I wanted my garden and I wanted it NOW! But, my mom lives in Florida. (Where, yes, she has a drool-worthy garden.) And when she came in town for Eliana’s birthday party, there was a lot of other stuff going on so we didn’t get to our little garden project. Well, actually, any time she might have had was taken up by birthday related projects she was tasked with completing.
Cupcake toppers had to be cut-out and glued onto popsicle sticks

Banner letters had to be cut-out

My mom spent forever stringing each photo so it looked perfect

Yeah, she pretty much rocks.

Anyway, with my mom not scheduled to come into town for a few more weeks, I set off on the gardening project with Suzanne. The other weekend, Suzanne and I drove to Lowes, gathered some vegetable plants, soil and supplies and came home to get to work. Suzanne knows a heck of a lot more about this gardening thing than I do so at the store the conversation mostly went like this:

“Jory, honey, what else do you want to get?”

“Uhhh, I don’t know Suzanne. What else do we need? I guess we need dirt, right?”

There were slim pickings at the store for a variety of vegetables that looked healthy. I’m realistic, so went for actual baby plants as opposed to seeds. Maybe next year I will plant from seeds. I’m also impatient and wanted to be able to eat these vegetables before the weather turns cold. So, we came away with 2 cucumber plants, 3 patio tomato plants, 2 okra plants, 1 leek plant and, wait for it…wait for it…2 yellow squash plants. Yep! I WILL make myself like those icky yellow squash plants. (Oh yeah, did I mention that I’m stubborn, too?)

So, we came home, called Matt and his dad, Steve, to come help us drag everything upstairs and got to work. Before we began, Suzanne soaked the deck where we would put the planter boxes so it would cool off a bit. Of course, we chose one of the hottest days yet to embark on this project. Then, we set up the two wooden boxes that would house the vegetables. Again, it was pretty much Suzanne directing me, which was just fine. She was the sensei to my karate kid. A little bit of soil into the bottom, a water-bath for the plants and then into the box with more soil on top. We also re-potted a basil plant my mother-in-law, Lauren, gifted me, and also put an herb garden and mandevilla plant that Steve and Suzanne brought over into new pots. Our garden was taking shape!

After a long and sweaty day, the garden was done. It was too hot for Eliana to stay outside with us, but Matt brought her out periodically to check on the progress of our work. And she plastered herself to the door to watch from the inside as well.

Aren't you done yet???
Over the past few weeks we’ve been enjoying a bounty of fresh herbs, but no vegetables have come up yet. With the exception of a little over-watering related illness that took out 1 okra plant and 1 cucumber plant, the vegetables seem to be thriving. Woohoo!
My mom says the cucumbers will replace the flowers. Cool!
And, before you know it, I’ll be posting a recipe about preparing delicious yellow squash.

It's My Party and I'll Pee if I Want To

This post is a bit of a departure from the norm since it isn’t really about what Eliana eats. But, last week she turned 1-year-old. (1! Holy crap!!) So, I think this event is worthy of a departure…

Her “Baby Pool Party” was all set to happen out on our deck. A rain date would be announced if needed since there is no way we were going to be able to fit 50 people in our apartment! Now, I know that this was Eliana’s first birthday party and she wouldn’t remember it and this party is really for the adults yeah, yeah, yeah. I tried to keep that in mind so I wouldn’t go nuts over this event. BUT, how could I let my baby’s first birthday slip by without a bang? And in true Jory style, I began thinking about it, stressing about it and making lists and notes of what I wanted it to be like waaaay in advance. But the actual work for it began only about a week out. (I’m an excellent procrastinator.) I had the foresight to hire my amazing babysitter, Kate, for the day. I figured an extra set of hands the morning of the event would be great and during the party she could help out too. The nights leading up to the party my friend Michaele** and my mom helped me make the decorations and everything was going to be ready and happen seamlessly on Saturday morning.

Cut to the morning of the party. About an hour before it begins:

Eliana is in PJs, I’m clothed but not in my party attire, nothing is set up, party-related stuff is all over the apartment because when I did go outside to begin setting up, I felt raindrops. And no, I DON’T think they were psychosomatic. I actually saw raindrops too. The guy from the bagel place, who prepared most of the food, has called to make sure we are, in fact, going to pick up all the food he prepared. Eliana is refusing to chill in the pack and play like she usually will when I need to be “hands free” and I’m trying very hard, and not really succeeding, to not freak the heck out about the state of affairs. I’m cursing everyone- including myself for sending Kate with Matt to get all the food rather than keeping her with me to help me prepare here. I always forget that having a party in my home is great. In theory. But in practice, it is so much more work than I remember from the last time I had the great idea to host a party at home. And then, in an instant, a crowd arrived to help. My mom, Michaele, Matt and Kate with all the food, my brother and his family and my in-laws. It was a whirlwind of activity with all hands on deck.
Um, you people are all getting ready for MY party. Why am I stuck in baby jail?
Really? You're not going to let me out??
Of course, it all came together in the end. I was able to stop for about 3 seconds and appreciate that the place looked great, our friends and family were laughing and having fun and the weather cleared up so the day was beautiful.

The decor:
Cupcake toppers from BugandBoo designs
Shelley also created the banner below. Love it!

My favorite of the decorations. It is a collection of the weekly and monthly photos we've taken of Eliana over the year. My mom spent a long time putting this together for me. Thanks, Mom!
The spread:

The pool scene:
"I'm comfy people. Where's the pool for everyone else?"

It's a par-tay, people!
Who knew my nephew Ryan (left) and Joey (my friend Amy's son) would become instant buddies?
Matt's brother a.k.a. Uncle Greggy
My dad with my nephew, David.
My nephew Zack inspecting the cupcake he decorated.
Matt's parents and Grandpa Paul.
My parents with Eliana.

Eliana enjoyed some bagels with lox and, of course, the special cupcake that was made just for her. Yes, I allowed the teeny tiny foodie to have something full of processed sugar and void of any nutritional value whatsoever.

She did stick her hands in the frosting to lick it and even got some on her nose. But, she didn’t do the typical baby move of sticking her whole face into her dessert. (I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit happy about that.) And, I was overjoyed that frosting didn’t get on either of us during that process. Woohoo! (Please, even though it was her party, you really think I wasn’t on guard against stains and spills?? And, of course, she had a special bib to commemorate the event. Obviously.)

So, why is this post called “It’s my party and I’ll pee if I want to?” Well, once it started to get sunny, Matt and I agreed that we should fill the baby pools and get Eliana into her bathing suit. We went into our bedroom to change her. I quickly ducked into our bathroom while Matt started that process.

All of a sudden Matt yells, “Which side is the front???” I assumed he was talking about her bathing suit so I yelled back, “The flowers go in front.” “No! The diaper! Which side is the front?!” he yelled back. Then I hear our good friend Steve, dad to Eliana’s “bestie” Sophie, talking to Matt. He came in to offer a little father-to-father support. For whatever reason, that set Eliana off and she began SCREEEEEEAMING at the top of her lungs and hysterically crying. (Thanks for trying though, Steve.) I finally finish up and come flying out of the bathroom to see a stressed-out Matt holding a naked and bawling Eliana. I’m about to step forward to help out when-whooooooosh-Eliana peed all over Matt. And I, of course, began cracking up. Yes, I was appropriately horrified by the fact that there was urine everywhere. And I was very glad that we have laminate a.k.a. easy-to-clean flooring, too. But, the look on Matt’s face was priceless. And apparently, Eliana just needed that release because the moment she peed she was calm and happy and ready to continue partying.

So, Happy FIRST Birthday to my clever, funny, silly, sometimes-seemingly-suicidal, happy and amazing Little Lady! I look forward to what the years ahead will bring.

Who needs presents? These ribbons are great!
And, thank you, to our friends and family who traveled from out of town to celebrate this special day with us.

**Michaele deserves an ENTIRE post dedicated to her amazingness. Not only has she spent countless hours at my place with her toolkit hanging artwork and photos on the walls, consulting on interior design and researching furniture options online for us to buy. But, she also found the beautiful “Happy Birthday” banner I ordered from BugandBoo designs on Etsy.com which also led me to the ridiculously cute cupcake toppers I got as well. And that is only what she has done recently to help me, and my little family, out. Michaele- you are a wonderful friend and I only hope I can reciprocate somehow one day.  I’m so lucky to have you as a friend and Eliana is lucky to have such an awesome Auntie. xoxoxoxo

Michaele, of course, took photos during the party. I love this one from when Eliana was around 3 weeks old.
